Overlooking Biarritz, its schools of surfers, and the Basque coast, this humble café set up in a shack on the cliffs is the perfect place to soak up the region’s beach vibe. Pull up at one of the outdoor tables for a coffee or juice in the morning, a light meal throughout the day, or a pre-dinner drink served with great tapas, with the added extra of the sunset over the Atlantic for décor. You might even get lucky with an improvised acapella concert.
SAN SEBASTIAN’S ‘SEMANA GRANDE’ FESTIVAL
Celebrating the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, the festival Semana Grande, or “big week”, this year kicks off on Sat 12 August with the traditional cannon shot, taking place at 7pm in Alderdi Eder gardens. But the highlight of one of the region’s most popular festivals – when Basque culture is celebrated at its fullest – is probably the spectacular International Firework Competition exploding over La Concha Bay on the last night, Sat 19.
CRISTOBAL BALENCIAGA MUSEOA
One of couture’s biggest heroes had humble beginnings in a picturesque Basque fishing village. Getaria celebrates possibly its most famous son with this museum that demonstrates Balenciaga’s legacy to the history of fashion and design via engaging exhibitions and events. Part of the museum is housed in the grand Aldamar Palace, the former summer residence of the Marquis de Casa Torres, where Balenciaga’s mother worked as a seamstress and the couturier first came into contact with haute couture.
This cult restaurant, nestled at the foothills of Mount Anboto deep in the Atxondo valley, will transport you far from the elegant tablecloths and expensive silverware of Basque country’s famous restaurants. Self-taught bbq master Victor Arguinzoniz carefully selects firewood from different trees to grill exceptional local produce – everything from the butter to the caviar – offering a radical new interpretation of Basque cuisine
Frank Gehry’s architectural manifesto, and the museum that put Basque country on the map, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. On top of a retrospective of the pioneering video artist Bill Viola (running until 9 Nov), the museum presents a whole programme dedicated to demonstrating the ways in which the building and surrounding city has changed over the last two decades. When you’re done exploring, hit up the museum’s Michelin-starred restaurant Neura, where chef Josean Alija gets to the essence of the local food culture.
Discover New York City with this historical, cultural and nature walk along the old above-ground train tracks of the Lower West Side. This park has become a must for locals and visitors alike, to escape the busy streets below and to relax and take in the city a bit closer to the sky. And now you can color in your favorite spots!
This giant coloring poster is available exclusively at Friends of the High Line.
SIP COFFEE BAR
Barista-owner Julie shares her passion for coffee in this casual but stylish café. Coffee is brewed – Chemex or espresso – using beans sourced from the Belgian micro roastery Or Coffee. But the commitment to quality is evident across the menu: from the teas (Bellocq) to the organic cakes, pastries and light lunch options, all prepared in-house. And the cherry on the cake : free wifi!
MARCHÉ DES QUAIS
An array of odours, colours and flavours, plus great views over the Garonne, at this lovely quayside food market. Every Sunday morning about 60 stands demonstrate their dedication to quality, often organic, produce, frequently sourced directly from small growers. This is the spot to throw back oysters from the nearby Arcachon bay, paired with a glass of local white.
Quai des Chartrons, 33000 Bordeaux
The hip hotel’s rooftop terrace has just reopened for the summer season. There’s no better spot for a drink at sunset, but it’s also open, weather permitting, for brunch on Sundays. On top of the generous all-you-can-eat menu devised by star chef Guy Savoy, you’ll enjoy fabulous views over the Old Town, with the spires of the 11th-century Cathédrale Saint-André de Bordeaux looming above you.
LA CITÉ DU VIN
One of the world’s greatest vineyards celebrates the industry that has defined its identity for over 1,000 years. The building’s innovative architecture sets the tone for an engaging, interactive presentation of the epic story of wine. Finish your visit with a glass of wine at the rooftop bar. This forward-thinking institution celebrates its first birthday this summer.
Located in the historic former Niel military barracks on the Right Bank, this innovative development is an incubator for sustainable development. Economically innovative and environmentally responsible start-ups share the compound with coworking spaces, a restaurant, a skateboard ramp, a bar, an organic and local grocery store, an Emmaus thrift store and a bicycle repair shop.

Since 1827 this much-loved general store has kept Marseille locals equipped with everything from French pocket and table knives, donkey milk soaps, floor or shoe wax, bicycle tyre repair kits, perfumed candles, sailor shirts, cast-iron cookware, olive pit removers… Seven generations later, the family owned business continues to navigate between tradition and innovation.
Hotel / Mama Shelter
The playful designer hotel chain is preparing for its second summer in Marseille. Already a local hotspot, the bar and restaurant are always buzzing: locals and visitors get together around the signature XXL table football at the bar, or the communal tables to enjoy the Guy Savoy devised menu; or sample the Pastis at the dedicated bar, Mama Pastaga.

Four full pages featuring our OMY coloring posters covered with Haute jewelry in the October issue of AirFrance Madame!
1. When coloring using only one color, it is important to vary the cross-hatching and layering to create shade and volume.
2. For example, on the bus, we used tiny lines to fill in the space, the more lines, the darker the area and effect. The angle of the lines can also define the plane of your object.
3. On the various buildings we used different forms – tiny circles create the roof tiles, diagonal lines give a sense of depth on the side of the building, etc.
4. To finalize the poster, we went back over the resting areas to add more lines and darken the shadows – the more the poster is colored, the more real it appears!
Your poster is finished and the results are original and creative!
Items used in this number: Our new giant Amsterdam poster
1. Painting with watercolors is about creating different layers. The more layers, the darker you can create shade and detail. Start filling in your poster, lightly coloring in the different larger zones. Once the color has dried, you can go back and add shadows where needed. Remember to leave small areas light or completely white to show shine or to create shape, like on the palm tree and Frankenstein’s pants for example.
2. Using different tones of the same color can also help create depth and shading. For example, on the the building we first added a light layer of blue, then purple on the roof, then more darker purple to create shadows. Adding small lines or dots can also help create a pattern, like the roof of the houses.
Your poster is finished and the results are original and creative!
